How to save Youtube videos on PC and convert them!

Watching youtube videos is one of my past time from the minute my wireless broadband has been installed last year. I would say the quality of video is great and comparable to the VCD format. I’ve been experimenting on some ways on how I can save those videos on my computer and play them back. After thorough research, this is what I’ve came up with...

1. Save the videos the old fashion way... As the video gets buffered and played on your PC, your web browser saves them in the Temp Folder. Internet Explorer or Mozilla for example saves the buffered video in any of the following folders in your primary drive “Temporary Internet Files” , “Temp” or [C:\Users\” your username”\AppData\Local\Temp] for Vista PC... Searching and using this method is a little bit tricky since the file name is different and randomized.

2. Save the videos using third party websites... A lot of websites offer this method by you pasting the URL of the video to their site, pressing “enter” or click “submit” and the site will give you a download link to save video to your PC. A sample website that does this is keepvid.com

3. Use a Freeware to do it for you. Lots of them are available online and all you have to do is to google the keyword “Save+youtube+video” and plenty of results will be displayed. Among all the available freewares that saves videos, my choice would be “KeepV Flash Converter.” KeepV Flash Converter is a free and powerful software that download and convert Flash / FLV files (such as YouTube videos) faster and better than most transcoder. Watch your downloaded videos on your iPod or with Windows Media Player with this completely free tool. Available conversions: Flash to AVI (divx); Flash to MOV (MAC); Flash to MP4 (iPod, PSP...); Flash to 3GP (Mobile). You can download this piece of freeware on their website http://keepv.com/

Important Programs that your Vista PC should be running!

by Rouge

Goodbye Windows XP! It was a pleasure using you. I just recently upgraded from Windows XP to Vista. There were lots of changes from this operating system 6 years after Windows XP’s release. Today I’ll be blogging about my experience in Windows Vista so far and what programs you can download and install that works fine with Vista.

You’ll be reading the installation process in sequence…enjoy installing!

I. System Requirements

a. Processor – processor running at 800 MHz or more (Pentium 3 is the minimum) Dual Core processor is recommended. A Quad Core processor will give you insane performance. (I’m using a Pentium Dual Core running 2.7 GHz)

b. RAM (memory) – 512 MB of RAM is minimum. 2GB is recommended if you’re doing games, 3D rendering from Software like AutoCAD or Maya 8.5. (I have 2 GB installed clocking @ 533Mhz)

c. Video Card – for maximum Vista experience I suggest using NVIDIA’s line of video card starting from 7300to 8800 GT with at least 128 of built-in video. (I’m using a midrange card that is 8500GT with 512MB video memory)

d. Power Supply – recommended minimum is at least 500 watts

e. Motherboard – I suggest you purchase any board you like that will support this configuration [ built-in sound ; 800 Mhz of FSB or more ; built in LAN ; and will support your processor and memory ]. Make sure you read articles of the specific make and model of your chosen board to know what users have experienced about it.

f. DVD-RW – DVD writers are now affordable starting at Php1,800 up depending on features such us writing speed and if it supports burning label on the top part of DVD. I’m currently using LG DVD-RW but I don’t suggest you purchase it because it broke on me and it can now only read and burn DVDs. Most of installers and games are now distributed in DVD format so better have one.

g. Keyboard and Mouse – not a major issue. If you are in the Philippines, you can buy a Multimedia KB for Php480.00 and an Optical mouse for Php180.00 from CD-R King. I love this gadget store except for the slow service and manual issuing of receipts. You can visit their site at www.cdrking.com for prices

II. Installation Process

  1. Install Windows Vista (32 bit) – You must start with a really clean formatted hard drive. I suggest you purchase about an 80Gb of space or more HDD (Hard Disk Drive). It’s ok not to make partition but I strongly recommend partitioning for back-up purposes. I have 200Gb of HDD for files and another separate 40 Gb HDD for Operating System and Programs. Installing Vista requires that you have a DVD-ROM for the installer. Learn how to read and follow installation instructions or using the crack supplied (oops, sorry!)
  2. Install your Device drivers. – Start by installing your Motherboard driver. It’s really important to restart your PC if the driver installer ask you to do so. Install your Video card driver next and follow it with the rest of your devices such us TV tuner, PCI sound card, USB camera, and other USB devices (printer, scanner etc..)
  3. Protecting your computer from threats and virus – Before beginning to install any other software, you must defend your system from any viruses if ever your installer has it. There are some freewares available for you to download online. Heres my suggestion.
    1. Norton 360 – If you can afford this piece of software, I suggest you install this all in one tool for defense and system optimization. You can try downloading this software as a trial or if you can’t really afford it or your system can’t handle this, there are still other alternatives. Try browsing through www.freshwap.com for the software and crack.
    2. Advanced Windows Care Personal– great freeware against spyware or malware, it will give your PC protection against known spywares. Other benefits of this software is registry cleaner, temporary files deletion, browser temp files clean up and start-up programs editing. The freeware can be downloaded at http://www.iobit.com/ After installing you must run the program to begin protecting your PC.
    3. AVG Antivirus free edition – a very light and effective piece of antivirus. You can download the latest version of this freeware at http://free.grisoft.com plus other free stuffs and free downloads.
  4. Getting Connected Online – We will prepare your PC for getting online. The recommended softwares below will give you the maximum benefits of getting connected to the world wide web.
    1. Yahoo Messenger 8 – download the free installer at http://messenger.yahoo.com
    2. Chikka v4 – free texting from your PC to any mobile phone in the US and Philippines. Register and download the chikka messenger at http://chikka.com/
    3. Mozilla Firefox 2 – Simply the best Internet browser on the planet is all I can say to this holy piece of freeware. Firefox features the fastest loading of page and lots of plug-in available for the best browsing experience. Download the latest vesion at this site www.mozilla.com Be sure to also download the recommended plugins for Mozilla as other website may not work on your PC. I strongly recommend downloading all below

1. Adobe Flash Player 9 – Really really important plugin as most websites features Flash animation and Flash Videos. Youtube will not work without this plugin. Install Firefox first before this plugin. The latest version of this plugin can be downloaded at http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ . Flash player works with Firefox, Netscape, and Opera browsers

2. Shockwave Player 10 – If you love sticking to Internet Explorer 7, this is the equivalent plugin for Flash. Download and install the files from this link http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/ Shockwave works with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  1. Productivity Applications – You always need your PC for the Office applications right? Here’s the list of software you need to install

A. Microsoft Office 2007 – The latest from Microsoft. The installer is more than 1 GB when I’ve downloaded this freshwap.com . The program has changed a lot from confusing buttons to rearranged menu. When I first used it, I don’t even know how to save it. You will get used to this program in the long run anyhow!.

B. Open Office – Guilty about downloading an illegal copy of Office? Well here’s an alternative program from Microsoft Office, it’s Open Office and its for free, download a copy here at http://www.openoffice.org/

  1. Photo Editing - I simply use the latest from Adobe, It’s the Adobe Photoshop CS3. the Installer was 400+ MB and you can download it using a torrent!. For more information about torrents please use this link http://www.sidewalkcrusaders.com/bthowto/btstart.html
  2. DVD-Burning – I use Nero 7.5 for backing up files. Installer is about 170MB+ . Download the installer also from www.freshwap.com
  3. Install the rest - Install any other programs you have you need every time. Don’t install games yet or any other programs that requires large space.
  4. Run a system defrag in SafeMode. Safemode can be accessed by pressing F8 before Windows starts loading on your PC. You can access defrag by pressing “Windows Key + E” that will bring up the My Computer window and right click on the selected drive, click the Tools tab and click the Defragment now button.
  5. Install antivirus update. Run Live update if you’re using Norton 360. This step only applies to PC connected online.
  6. Back up your system - I always to this to my clients so everytime the PC crash, a back-up of the installed OS and programs are already available. I use Nero’s HDD backup for this or you can use other methods such as Norton Ghost or WinImage. Again the mentioned software is available at www.freshwap.com
